Descant

More than any other element in the daily schedule of At First Sight, Descant draws the connection between the gift of music and God, the Giver.  It provides students the opportunity to establish their musical foundation in the Spirit. During this morning meeting we dig deeply into the word of God as expressed through hymns.

Dr. Bruce Ashton leads the study of the history, beauty, depth and joy to be found in the rich tradition of hymn-singing.  From familiar to very new, from simple to complex, from quiet and peaceful to rousing hymns of faith, the hymns we explore during Descant address the spectrum of the Christian experience.

Singing together draws us into community, uniting our voices and strengthening our faith through music.  Sight-singing is an invaluable way to further develop the sight-reading skills foundational to At First Sight, and training instrumentalists to use their God-given voices in a healthy way makes them more effective musicians.
